In October 2009, President Obama declared the first National Information Literacy Awareness Month. Read his proclamation and learn more about this initiative here.

JSC Information Literacy Initiatives
Read the first installment of our action plan on the Faculty page.

Last semester Professor Reed Fisher and I piloted a curriculum mapping project to embed information literacy instruction in JSC business courses. Our collaboration can serve as a model for aligning library instruction with student learning outcomes to satisfy requirements for the VSC information literacy graduation standard.

The Information Literacy Sequence: Business/Economics document is a work in progress.Other documents for the action plan include:
1) Standards-Based Instructional Activities for Business Majors and
2) A template for developing curriculum maps in other JSC academic departments.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Dorothy Anne Warner, author of A Disciplinary Blueprint for the Assessment of Information Literacy, for guidance in creating a framework for integrating information literacy instruction throughout the JSC curriculum. Her book inspired me to go "Back to the Books" to revisit the teachings of ground-breaking librarians who put theory into practice for educating library users.

Putting Online E-tools to Work
Vermont Library Conference Panel,
May 24, 2005
In Spring, 2005 JSC adopted TILT, the information literacy tutorial developed by the University of Texas, Austin. The Vermont State Colleges' adaptation of this award winning online learning tool was tested in several courses on the Blackboard™ platform. Using the gradebook and survey functions, we measured student mastery of basic skills to provide a foundation for a developmental program of library instruction.

Presentation Materials
The latest version of VSC TILT is at http://libraries.vsc.edu/newtilt. Currently, the assessments are available only to students and faculty enrolled in the Moodle courses.

Link to the PowerPoint slides of the JSC information literacy timeline and the survey results of the pilot project for more information on the implementation of the VSC: TILT at Johnson State College.
